Starting from the Dome Tearooms carpark, we ascend for 1km via steps and gravel path onto the ridge, passing through podocarp and broadleaf forest to the Lookout viewing platform.
From here we can see Warkworth town and down to the satellite dishes of the satellite station.
Continue from here to the summit of the Dome (336m) where there are views out to Taranga Island (part of the Hen & Chicken islands.) .
From the Lookout, the track changes to a tramping track –
We will encounter exposed tree roots, steep bits and uneven terrain in places and probably some mud if it’s been raining.
Make sure to wear suitable footwear!
We will continue till we reach the kauri grove then return.
The Waiwhiu Kauri Grove consists of 20 mature kauri that escaped the kauri logging days of old.
If the weather has been wet, we will see how far we get before turning around.
This track is part of the Te Araroa trail (“The Long Pathway”)
Time: approx. 4 hours plus food and photo stops.
