A combination of three walks that you are unlikely to have done before.
So, don’t trudge around the malls, tramp around the mountain with Angelina singing “she’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes… “!
Stonefields Heritage Trail (45mins, 4km)
A circuit around the recently opened Stonefields Heritage Trail, old quarry rock face, wetlands boardwalk and residential streets. Three pou installations created and donated by Ngāti Paoa, Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Te Ata appear along the trail. The path has sections of pavement, boardwalk and gravel trail, and it’s generally wide enough for 2-3 people to walk side by side. There’s set of stairs and a short, steep section at Mt Wellington. The Maungarei wetlands are home to Papango (New Zealand Scaup), New Zealand’s only diving duck. The wetlands reserve has public toilets.
Mt Wellington Domain ( 60 mins , 3.8KM )
Maungarei / Mt Wellington has a near circular base and three overlapping craters, with one now mostly filled by a water reservoir. Lava flows mostly headed towards Ellerslie and Penrose and one flow helped form the wetlands that lie in nearby Waiatarua Reserve. Maungarei means ‘the watchful mountain’ and the mountain is an impressive archaeological site with its flanks formerly covered by terraced house sites and food-storage pits. The crest of the craters have extensive Māori earthworks. The Mt Wellington Quarry that sits to the west of the maunga (mountain) was New Zealand’s largest aggregate quarry but it was closed in 2008 and is now the site of the Stonefields subdivision. At the tihi, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Tāmaki Estuary, Panmure Basin, Rangitoto Island and the Stonefields residential development.
Panmure Basin or Tamaki Path – OPTIONAL
As the above walks are quite short , the group can choose if they want to carry on walking either Panmure Basin or the Tamaki Path. The Panmure Basin is closer to Panmure Station . The path is 3km , 35mins (loop walk). The Tamaki Path is a bit further walk from the Panmure Station. The path is about 7.3KM, 80 mins ( one way). I am hoping to arrange a shuttle at the end to drive us back to our cars .
If needing a lift meet the leader at 115 Lynbrooke Avenue, Blockhouse Bay around 8am
