Grade: Easy
It’s been a while since the club has visited the Awhitu Peninsula (North of Waiuku)
Today will be a medley of activities exploring the Awhitu Peninsular. We will of course visit the Regional Park for some easy walking along the coastline and into the park. We will visit the Manukau Heads Lighthouse (now that we are all experts on light houses from recent club speakers). Inside, we can take a look at the pieces of artwork and wall displays telling the story of the HMS Orpheus, which ran aground in 1863 as it approached Manukau Harbour, tragically killing 189 people. From the balcony at the top, we are welcomed by beautiful views of the harbour back across to the more familiar terrain of the Waitakeres. We will also explore Big Bay depending on how we are going for time.
