Probably going Motutapere Hut which is south of the hut we stayed at last time (Te Rereatukahia Hut). It’s a 3 bunk hut so tenting would be the norm. There are 2 ways to get it using different circuits off either Hot Springs Road or Thompsons Track Road. The Thompson’s Track circuit has 4 and a half hours up via a steep track to Mt Eliza and 5 hours down Thompsons Track which is used part of the way by 4WD vehicles. The hut is 1 1/4 hours north of the junction so there is a little bit of double tracking. If going into the Kaimais from Hot Springs Road there is a circuit with Te Rereatukahia Hut using Taahu Track one way and Kauri Grove Track which meets the track we used last time to Te Rereatukahia Hut. This circuit could also include Motutapere Hut instead which is 1 1/2 hours to the south but looking at Anne Dudley’s book the track has some fixed ladders and steel rope at the trickier places.
All the above are circuits which come back to the start so vehicles can be parked without a shuttle. If there was a driver there are many other possibilities including Kaimai crossings.
