Motukaraka/Flat Island, Beachlands @ Glen Eden Kiwibank
Jul 19 @ 8:30 am

Grade: Easy

Time: 3-4 hours

Meet at Glen Eden or at 9.45am at corner Puriri Road and Hawke Crescent, Beachlands.

The island is accessible at low tide via a sandbar three hours either side of low tide.  On 19 July it is at 11.50am. The island can be walked around and climbed up onto. There is a shipwreck, a shag colony and sandstone cliffs.

New Zealand Herald:

“The island glitters less than 500m away, but a sense of magic belies its proximity. We feel thrust into the turquoise water of the gulf, adrift on a giant raft.”

Then we will go to the nearby Omana Regional park.

Club Night – Great Walks in New Zealand @ Kelston Community centre
Jul 20 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Over the years Christine has tramped (and paddled) all of the Great Walks on DOC’s list plus walked many other tracks equally beautiful and with as high a standard of track and accommodation as the official Great Walks. So enjoy seeing tramping from Te Urewera to Rakiura/Stewart Island and you may be tempted to book your next tramping holiday. Many familiar faces feature in the slides. The pic is of the Queen Charlotte Walkway.

Please come along & support your fellow trampers, mix & mingle & have a cuppa.

Panmure – Pt England – St Helliers @ New Lynn Bus Station Stop 5914
Jul 26 @ 8:30 am

For today’s walk, we will meet at the NEW LYNN BUS STATION STOP 5914 where we will catch the number 18 bus into the city (may even be a double decker) We will then walk down to Britomart, and board the 9.46AM train to Panmure  The journey to Panmure is 15mins, so our walk will commence around 10am

On arrival at Panmure, we will walk down Lagoon drive and take a left turn, and follow the walkway through to Pt England, on through Churchhill  and Glover parks. Finishing at St Helliers, where we will bus back to Britomart.

The walk will be approx. 3hrs excluding breaks. Of course anyone wishing to extend the walk can walk to Britomart approx. 2 hrs, instead of the bus option.

Originally the trip into town was going to be by train, but because of the closure of Mt Eden station, the train only goes as far as Kingsland, and would have involved a rail bus to Newmarket, and then back on the train to Britomart, so the best option is the number 18 bus from New Lynn direct into town. The number 18 bus leaves every 12 minutes and follows Great North rd through Avondale, Pt Chev, and Grey Lynn.

Please advise leader if you wish to meet at Britomart or Panmure.

Join the cockle gatherers (hence the name of the bay). We can either retrace our steps or come back on quiet residential streets. The reserve passes through a diverse landscape of farmland (minus the animals), native forest, unique estuary and salt marsh habitats. When we are almost back at the barn we have the option of extending the walk.
